6 Ways to Cope If Youve Got a Terrible Manager If youre in a job you love but have a boss you hate, things can get difficult. Management makes a real difference to working life motivation can disappear if you feel uninspired or under appreciated. But if it looks like theyre here to stay it might be worth adjusting your mindset and changing up some things in order to cope. 1) Dont fight fire with fire Reacting to a horrible boss can be difficult, as its easy to get angry and let emotions get in the way. Dont let frustrated feelings build up and then pour out irrationally talk to peers or colleagues about your difficulties and accept advice from them. From there youll be able to act rationally (not angrily!). 2) Remember the reasons you love your job Sometimes it can feel like a bad boss takes over your entire life. Its important to remember that they are only one part of your life and that it shouldnt effect every aspect of you life/job. 3) Be autonomous If you dont get on with your boss, sometimes its best to act as your own leader instead of having to rely on a manager or boss you dont like. Make your own leadership decisions, but make sure not to undermine your manager keep them informed of any decisions you do make. 4) Always take the high road Never let your bosses behaviour effect yours in a negative way. Remember the saying dony cut off your own nose to spite your face. Acting entitled, losing interest or not performing isnt going to reflect badly on your boss, its going to reflect badly on you. Think about your personal brand! 5) Speak up, but also listen If you think your bosses behaviour has impacted negatively on your day to day working life, its time to say something. Politely speak to them about your concerns it may be a misunderstanding that can be sorted out. Take the time to understand their side. 6) Find a new mentor within your company If youre looking for guidance within your company, sometimes youll have to look elsewhere. Having a mentor is a fantastic way to gain experience and develop your skills. A mentor can also help you cope in general with a bad boss. Fuzzy Resume Language Even the best wordsmiths get caught up in fuzzy language sometimes. Are you helping a recruiter understand your skills, or guilty of using fuzzy language that simply gets ignored? Take the ever-popular âexcellent communication skillsâ (please.) What do you actually mean? If youâre in sales, you might mean that you have created hundreds of effective sales presentations and led customer information sessions. If youâre a teacher or trainer, you might mean that your presenting skills have been requested at state or national conferences. If youâre a social worker or manager, you might mean that youâve been recognized for your conflict resolution or coaching skills. If youâre an administrative assistant, you might mean that your correspondence and reports are error free and praised for their clarity. You get the picture. Being specific means loading your resume with key words that decision makers will be looking for. Consider using these specific terms instead of the fuzzy âcommunicationsâ terms: Negotiation Sales / closing Reporting / documentation Coaching Public speaking / presentations People fall into the same trap when they talk about âexperience.â Try offering quantitative proofs to attract recruiters. âI have over ten years of experience in complex contract management.â âI have delivered more than fifty presentations for our management team within the past five years.â âI have closed over $3 million in equipment sales since 2009.â Employers are using scanning technology and key word internet searches to find the best candidates for their needs. Specific phrases with quantitative proofs will help you get found; think of it as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for your career. Whenever you list a skill on your resume or in your cover letter, take a moment to think about what proof you would offer of someone were to ask why you think youâre good. Then see if you can weave that response into your resume. If you canât think of any strong proofs, but are simply listing it because thatâs what everyone does, maybe you should save the space.

Job seekers oftentimes get so focused on the smaller details of applying for jobs that they tend to lose sight of the one thing that employers are really thinking about and looking for in a candidate. When reviewing job descriptions, the person looking to work at the company ends up zeroing in on meeting every single job description criteria to a âT.â Which is important, but itâs not REALLY what employers are thinking about. Thereâs one simple question, when you really boil it down, which is what any employer is after. As Nick Corcodilos of âAsk the Headhunterâ mentioned in a recent post on NPR.orgâs website, this is what companies want the most out of people they interview: âCan the applicant do the work profitably?â Yep. Thatâs it. The prospective company is looking for someone to join their team with an âA gameâ on that will achieve the goals of the company, which, in the for-profit world, is to make money. This doesnât mean you have to be a sales person and make money in terms of new revenues. It could also be about how you save money or save time. This matters just as much. How does your experience help companies achieve their goals? This is the most important thing that many job seekers forget to address. They are so busy writing about how they âsuccessfullyâ launched a new project that they forget to quantify or define what success means. And the potential employer is left holding the bag, trying to figure out what you mean, when they really want you to show them the money. The next time you sit down to update your résumé, try taking an employerâs viewpoint. Ask yourself: âSo what? Did this help? If so, how?â Get into the quantifiable results.
